Mercato Centrale

The Central Market is the best place in Florence to grab a bite to eat. As the name suggests, it is located centrally and there is enough of a variety inside to satisfy all the travelers in your party!

The Central Market is located just a block or two from the Basilica of San Lorenzo. It would be difficult to show you an image of the exterior because in addition to the food inside the market, the exterior is surrounded by vendors of all sorts of leather goods, souvenirs, and clothing. Do not hesitate to buy from the vendors here. Although I certainly can't vouch for all the goods sold, the vendors are legitimate licensed businesses. I still use the wallet I bought years ago!

Inside the market is where you will buy all the food. In general, the ground floor consists of some grab and go food, and the food upstairs is for sitting and eating. My absolute favorite place to eat is from the corner stall above at the top of the page. You select the pasta and sauce, and they will serve it up on a plate. You have to stand and eat it, but it is worth it!

There are a tremendous number of places to eat. Please be aware, that some of these places have food meant to be taken home. (Think Whole Foods.) And if you are not careful, you will be given cold soup! The expectation of the vendor is that you are stopping by on your way home to pick up something to heat up at home!

In addition to food, there are PLENTY of places to buy souvenirs, such as pasta in fun shapes, unique food items, or simply Italy themed aprons and towels. But don't worry - this is NOT a tourist trap. (How many tourists are buying fresh fish or tripe?)

I encourage you the reader to simply look at a selection of photos from Google maps to get an idea of what a wonderful place this is! (Google Maps Photos)

The rest of this post is just a gratuitous selection of food photos.
